Balaam and the Talking Donkey – Book 5

Balaam and the Talking Donkey
Long ago, as the Israelites traveled through the wilderness toward the Promised Land, the nearby nations became afraid of them. One king named Balak, who ruled the land of Moab, was especially worried. He had heard how God had helped the Israelites defeat their enemies, and he feared his own kingdom would be next.
Balak decided to ask a man named Balaam for help. Balaam was known as a prophet, and people believed his blessings and curses were powerful. Balak sent messengers with gifts and money, asking Balaam to come and curse the Israelites.
But that night, God spoke to Balaam and said, “Do not go with them. You must not curse the Israelites because they are blessed.”
So Balaam told the messengers, “The Lord will not allow me to go.”
Balak did not give up. He sent more important officials with even greater rewards and promises of honor. Balaam wanted the rewards, but he asked God again what he should do.
This time, God allowed Balaam to go, but only on one condition: Balaam must speak only the words God gave him.
Early the next morning, Balaam saddled his donkey and began the journey with the officials from Moab. But along the way, something unusual happened.
God saw that Balaam’s heart was not fully right. Balaam was thinking more about rewards than about obeying God. So God sent an angel with a drawn sword to stand in the road.
Balaam could not see the angel, but the donkey could.
Suddenly, the donkey turned off the road into a field. Balaam became angry and hit the donkey to force it back onto the path.
A little farther ahead, the angel stood in a narrow path between two walls. When the donkey saw the angel again, it pressed close to the wall to avoid danger, crushing Balaam’s foot. Balaam angrily struck the donkey once more.
Then the angel moved to a very narrow place where there was no room to turn aside. When the donkey saw the angel a third time, it simply lay down on the road.
Balaam was furious. He beat the donkey again with his staff.
Then God did something amazing. He allowed the donkey to speak!
The donkey looked at Balaam and said, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?”
Balaam was so upset that he answered the donkey as if it were normal! “You have made me look foolish,” he shouted.
The donkey replied, “Have I not always served you faithfully? Have I ever acted like this before?”
Then God opened Balaam’s eyes, and he finally saw the angel standing in the road with a drawn sword. Balaam quickly bowed down in fear.
The angel said, “Your donkey saved your life. If she had not turned away, I would have struck you down.”
Balaam realized he had been wrong and confessed his sin. The angel reminded him to speak only the words God commanded.
When Balaam finally met King Balak, something unexpected happened. Instead of cursing Israel, Balaam blessed them! Each time Balak asked for a curse, God gave Balaam words of blessing instead.
King Balak became angry and disappointed, but Balaam explained that he could only speak the message God gave him.
The story of Balaam and the talking donkey teaches us many important lessons. It reminds us that God sees our hearts and knows our true thoughts and desires.
The story also teaches us about obedience. Balaam wanted rewards and honor, but God wanted him to follow His instructions faithfully.
Most importantly, the story shows God’s great power. He even used a donkey to deliver a message and protect Balaam from danger! Nothing is impossible for God.
Sometimes God may warn us when we are heading in the wrong direction. Like Balaam, we should listen carefully and choose to obey God instead of following selfish desires.
And so, Balaam learned that God’s plans cannot be changed by greed or human wishes. God’s blessing over His people remained strong, and even a humble donkey became part of an unforgettable miracle.
