Jonathan told David, “I will find out my father’s true intentions and send you a signal.” The next day, Jonathan tested Saul by asking why David was missing from the king’s table. Saul became furious and shouted angrily, proving that he truly wanted to kill David. Jonathan was heartbroken. He went out to the field and used arrows to send David the secret warning they had planned. David understood immediately that he must run away to stay safe. Afterward, the two friends met one last time before David left. They hugged each other and cried because they knew they might not see one another again for a long time. Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace. We have promised friendship before God forever.” Even though Jonathan was the prince and rightful heir to the throne, he did not hate David or compete with him. Instead, he trusted God’s plan and remained a faithful friend. David never forgot Jonathan’s kindness.
