Long ago in Israel, there lived two young men whose friendship became one of the greatest friendships in the Bible. Their names were David and Jonathan. David was the brave shepherd boy who defeated the giant Goliath with only a sling and a stone. After that great victory, King Saul welcomed David into his palace. Saul’s son Jonathan met David for the first time, and the two quickly became close friends. Jonathan was a prince, the son of the king, but he was not proud or selfish. He saw that God was with David and loved him like a brother. The Bible says their hearts were knit together in friendship. To show his love and loyalty, Jonathan gave David his robe, armor, sword, bow, and belt. These were valuable gifts, especially for a prince. It showed that Jonathan respected David and cared about him deeply. As time passed, David became more famous in Israel because he won many battles and helped protect the nation. The people cheered for David wherever he went. But King Saul became jealous and angry. He feared that David might someday become king instead of Jonathan. Saul’s jealousy grew so strong that he decided to harm David. Several times Saul even tried to throw a spear at him! David was frightened but continued to serve the king faithfully. Jonathan was troubled when he learned about his father’s anger. He knew David had done nothing wrong. Jonathan wanted to protect his friend, so he spoke kindly to Saul and tried to calm him down. For a short time, Saul listened. But soon Saul became angry again and planned to kill David. Jonathan secretly warned David about the danger. The two friends met quietly in a field to make a plan. Jonathan told David, “I will find out my father’s true intentions and send you a signal.” The next day, Jonathan tested Saul by asking why David was missing from the king’s table. Saul became furious and shouted angrily, proving that he truly wanted to kill David. Jonathan was heartbroken. He went out to the field and used arrows to send David the secret warning they had planned. David understood immediately that he must run away to stay safe. Afterward, the two friends met one last time before David left. They hugged each other and cried because they knew they might not see one another again for a long time. Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace. We have promised friendship before God forever.” Even though Jonathan was the prince and rightful heir to the throne, he did not hate David or compete with him. Instead, he trusted God’s plan and remained a faithful friend. David never forgot Jonathan’s kindness. Many years later, after Jonathan died in battle, David showed kindness to Jonathan’s family because of their special friendship. The story of David and Jonathan teaches us the importance of true friendship. A real friend is loyal, honest, caring, and willing to help others, even during difficult times. Jonathan could have been jealous of David, but instead he chose love and kindness. David also remained faithful and thankful for his friend’s support.
