David Becomes King – Book 14

Long ago in the land of Israel, there lived a young shepherd boy named David. He was the youngest son in his family and spent most of his days caring for sheep in the fields. While watching the sheep, David sang songs to God, played his harp, and learned to trust the Lord with all his heart.
At that time, Saul was the king of Israel. But Saul stopped obeying God, and the Lord chose someone else to become the next king. God sent the prophet Samuel to visit David’s family in Bethlehem.
When Samuel arrived, David’s father, Jesse, proudly brought his older sons before the prophet. They looked tall, strong, and handsome. Samuel thought one of them must surely be God’s chosen king. But God told Samuel, “People look at the outside, but I look at the heart.”
Finally, Jesse called for David, who had been out in the fields caring for sheep. When David arrived, God told Samuel, “This is the one.” Samuel poured oil on David’s head to show that God had chosen him to become king one day.
Even after being chosen, David did not become king immediately. He returned to caring for sheep and continued serving faithfully. Later, David became famous after defeating the giant Goliath with only a sling and a stone. The people of Israel admired David’s bravery, but King Saul became jealous of him.
Saul feared that David might take the throne, so he became angry and tried many times to harm him. David had to run and hide in caves and wilderness areas for several years. Even though David had opportunities to hurt Saul, he refused to do so because he respected God’s chosen king.
During those difficult years, David trusted God completely. He prayed often and wrote many beautiful songs called psalms. God protected David wherever he went.
At last, after many years, King Saul died in battle. The people of Judah invited David to become their king. Later, all the tribes of Israel came together and crowned David king over the whole nation.
David was thirty years old when he became king. He ruled wisely and led the people closer to God. One of the first things David did was make Jerusalem the capital city of Israel. He brought the Ark of the Covenant there with great celebration because he wanted the people to honor God.
David became known as a brave warrior, a wise leader, and a man who loved God deeply. Although David was not perfect and made mistakes during his life, he always turned back to God with a humble heart.
Under David’s leadership, Israel became stronger and more peaceful. The people respected him because he cared for them and trusted the Lord.
The story of David becoming king teaches us that God often chooses people differently than humans do. David was just a shepherd boy, but God saw his faithful heart. God cares more about kindness, faith, and obedience than appearance or strength.
David’s life also teaches us patience. Even though God chose David early in life, he had to wait many years before becoming king. During that time, David learned courage, wisdom, and trust in God.
Most importantly, David reminds us that we should follow God wherever He leads us. When we trust Him faithfully, God can use us in wonderful ways, no matter how small or unimportant we may seem to others.
