Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Tomb – Book 13
Long ago, in a quiet, sun-kissed village named Bethany, lived two kind sisters named Martha and Mary. They shared their home with their beloved brother, Lazarus. Their house was a place always filled with the sweet aroma of warm bread, the sound of bright laughter, and a deep, comforting peace.
Martha, Mary, and Lazarus shared a very special secret: they were dear, close friends with Jesus. Whenever Jesus visited their village, He would sit in their courtyard, beneath the shade of the green olive trees, sharing stories of God’s grand love while the family listened with wide, joyful eyes.
But one sorrowful day, the laughter in the house faded away. Lazarus became incredibly sick. His fever grew warm, and his strength quickly left him. Mary and Martha sat by his bedside, gently bathing his forehead with cool water, their hearts heavy with worry.
Knowing only one person who could help, the sisters quickly sent a runner through the dusty roads to find Jesus. The message was simple and full of trust: “Lord, the one you love so dearly is very sick.”
When Jesus received the message far away, He looked out across the hills with calm, peaceful eyes. He did not rush back immediately. Instead, He smiled softly and told His disciples, “This sickness will not end in death. It is happening so that everyone can see the magnificent power and glory of God.” Jesus knew that God had a grand plan—a plan that would require great patience and even greater faith.
By the time Jesus finally arrived on the outskirts of Bethany, a heavy sadness had settled over the entire village. Lazarus had been gone for four long days, resting inside a quiet cave tomb with a massive, heavy stone rolled across the entrance.
When Martha heard that Jesus was near, she ran out to meet Him on the road, her eyes shimmering with tears. “Lord,” she whispered, her voice trembling, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now, I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”
Jesus looked at her with pure kindness, His voice steady and comforting like a warm shield. “Your brother will rise again, Martha. I am the Resurrection and the Life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Do you believe this?”
Martha wiped away a tear, looking into His reassuring eyes. “Yes, Lord,” she whispered. “I believe.”
Soon, Mary ran out to Jesus too, falling at His feet in deep sorrow. Seeing His dear friends crying, and watching the villagers mourn around them, Jesus’ own heart was deeply moved with love and sympathy. Standing before them in the warm afternoon light, tears gently rolled down Jesus’ face. The villagers looked on, whispering to one another, “See how much he loved him!”
Jesus walked gracefully toward the dark cave tomb. The air was still, and the crowd gathered in absolute silence.
“Roll the stone away,” Jesus commanded firmly.
The crowd gasped. Martha blinked in surprise. “But Lord,” she said softly, “he has been in the tomb for four days.”
Jesus smiled at her with gentle reassurance. “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
Slowly and carefully, a few strong men stepped forward, leaning their weight against the massive stone. With a loud, scraping sound, the heavy rock rolled back, letting the warm, golden sunlight pour directly into the dark, silent cave.
Jesus stepped right up to the entrance. He lifted His eyes toward the bright blue sky above and prayed out loud so everyone could hear: “Father, thank you for hearing me. I know you always hear me, but I say this for the sake of all the people standing here, so they will believe you sent me.”
Then, Jesus took a deep breath, stood tall, and called out into the darkness with a loud, powerful voice that echoed through the hills:
“Lazarus, come out!”
For a second, the world seemed to stop spinning. No one moved. No one breathed.
Then, deep inside the shadows of the cave, something incredible happened. A rustling sound echoed from the dark. Suddenly, a figure stepped forward into the golden light! It was Lazarus! He was completely alive, his cheeks warm with color, though his hands and feet were still wrapped in strips of linen cloth.
The crowd gasped in absolute wonder. Joyful shouts and cries of amazement burst through the village! Mary and Martha covered their mouths in disbelief, their tears of sadness turning instantly into bursts of pure happiness.
Jesus smiled warmly at the astonished crowd and said, “Unwrap him, and let him go free!”
The sisters rushed forward, throwing their arms around Lazarus, laughing and praising God as they unwrapped the linen cloths. The brother they loved was entirely well, smiling and breathing the fresh air once again. That evening, the sweet sound of laughter returned to the little house in Bethany, brighter and more beautiful than ever before. Everyone in the village knew that day that no matter how dark or scary things seem, God’s love and power are always stronger.
