The sun was hot, and the desert seemed to go on forever. The people of Israel had been walking for many days. Their feet were tired, their lips were dry, and their water was running out. “Water… we need water,” the children cried. The parents looked worried. Everyone was thirsty. Finally, after walking for three long days without water, they saw something in the distance. “Water! Water!” the people shouted with joy. They hurried forward as fast as they could. But when they reached the water and took a drink… they quickly spit it out. “Yuck! It’s bitter!” “We can’t drink this!” “This water is no good!” The place was called Marah, which means bitter. The people began to complain again. “What shall we drink?” they asked Moses. “Why did you bring us here?” Moses listened to them. He could see they were tired and thirsty. So once again, he turned to God and prayed. “Lord, please help us,” Moses said. God heard Moses and showed him something special—a piece of wood. “Take that piece of wood,” God said, “and throw it into the water.” Moses trusted God. He picked up the wood and walked to the bitter water. Everyone watched closely. Would this really help? Moses threw the wood into the water. Suddenly, something amazing happened. The bitter water became sweet! The people tasted it again. “It’s good!” they said with surprise. “It’s fresh! We can drink it!” Everyone drank the water. Their thirst was gone, and their hearts were filled with joy. God had turned something bitter into something good. Then God gave them an important lesson. “If you listen to Me and trust Me,” God said, “I will take care of you.” The people learned that even when things seem hard… Even when life feels bitter… God can make things better. After that, they traveled to a place called Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and many palm trees. There, they rested and were refreshed. From that day on, the people remembered: When life feels bitter, trust God. Because God can turn even the hardest moments into something sweet.
