Saul was a man who knew a lot about God’s laws. He was very serious and believed he was doing the right thing. But Saul did not believe that Jesus was God’s Son. He became angry with the people who followed Jesus and tried to stop them. He even helped put some of them in prison. Saul thought he was serving God, but he was making a big mistake. One day, Saul received permission to travel to a city called Damascus. He planned to find followers of Jesus there and bring them back as prisoners. Early in the morning, Saul and his companions began their long journey along the dusty road. The sun was shining brightly overhead as they walked. Suddenly, something amazing happened! A brilliant light flashed from heaven, brighter than the sun. The light surrounded Saul, and he fell to the ground. Everyone stopped in surprise. Saul covered his eyes. Then he heard a voice speaking to him. “Saul, Saul, why are you hurting Me?” Saul trembled. “Who are You, Lord?” he asked. The voice answered, “I am Jesus, whom you are hurting.” Saul was shocked. Jesus was alive! The followers of Jesus had been telling the truth all along. “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Saul asked. Jesus told him, “Go into the city, and you will be told what to do.” When Saul stood up, he opened his eyes, but he could not see anything. The bright light had blinded him. His companions had to take his hand and carefully lead him into Damascus. For three days Saul could not see. He did not eat or drink. Instead, he prayed and thought about what had happened. He realized he had been wrong about Jesus. In Damascus lived a follower of Jesus named Ananias. One day, God spoke to Ananias in a vision. “Go and visit Saul,” God said. Ananias was frightened. “Lord, isn’t Saul the man who hurts Your people?” But God replied, “Go. I have chosen Saul for a special purpose.” Ananias trusted God and obeyed. He went to the house where Saul was staying. Gently placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, Jesus has sent me so that you may see again.” Immediately, something like tiny scales fell from Saul’s eyes. He could see again! Saul was filled with joy. He was baptized and became a follower of Jesus. Everything had changed. Soon, Saul began telling people about Jesus. The same man who had once tried to stop Christians was now teaching others to follow Christ. People were amazed by the change in him. Some could hardly believe it! As the years passed, Saul became widely known by his Roman name, Paul. He traveled to many cities, sharing the Good News of Jesus with people everywhere. He became one of the greatest missionaries in the early church. The bright light on the road changed Saul’s life forever. God showed that no one is too far away to be forgiven. When people trust Jesus, He can change their hearts and give them a brand-new purpose.
