High above the desert, a tall mountain stood covered in clouds. It was called Mount Sinai. At the bottom of the mountain, the people of Israel waited eagerly. They had traveled a long way with their leader, Moses, and now something very special was about to happen. “God is going to speak to us,” Moses told them. “But I will go up the mountain to listen to Him closely.” The people watched as Moses slowly climbed up the rocky path. Thunder rumbled, lightning flashed, and a thick cloud covered the mountain. It felt both exciting and a little scary. Up on the mountain, Moses met with God. God loved His people very much. He wanted to guide them so they could live happily, safely, and kindly with one another. So, God gave Moses ten special rules—called the Ten Commandments. “These commandments will help my people know what is right and wrong,” God said. “They will show them how to love Me and how to love others.” God wrote these commandments on two stone tablets. They were strong and lasting, just like His words. After some time, Moses came down the mountain carrying the stone tablets carefully in his hands. His face shone brightly because he had been in God’s presence. The people gathered around him, curious and excited. “Listen carefully,” Moses said. “These are the words God has given us.” He read them aloud: “First, you shall have no other gods before Me.” “This means,” Moses explained, “we must love and trust God above everything else.” “Second, do not make idols.” “We should not worship statues or things. God is the only one we worship.” “Third, do not misuse God’s name.” “We must always speak God’s name with respect.” “Fourth, remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.” “This is a special day to rest and thank God.” The people nodded as they listened. “Fifth, honor your father and mother.” “This means obeying and respecting your parents.” “Sixth, do not hurt others.” “Seventh, be faithful and truthful in your relationships.” “Eighth, do not steal.” “Ninth, do not lie.” “Tenth, do not be jealous of what others have.” Moses looked at the people kindly. “These commandments are not just rules,” he said. “They are a way to live a good life—full of love, honesty, and kindness.” The people understood that these commandments would help them become a strong and caring community. From that day on, the Ten Commandments became a guide for the people of Israel. Parents taught them to their children. Friends reminded each other of them. And slowly, the people learned to live in peace and harmony. Even today, these commandments are remembered all over the world. They remind us to love God, respect others, and choose what is right—even when it is hard. And high above the desert, Mount Sinai stood quietly, a reminder of the day God gave His special message to His people—a message of love, guidance, and hope.
