Baby Moses in the Basket Long ago, in the land of Egypt, the people of Israel were living as slaves. They worked very hard building cities and carrying heavy loads. The king of Egypt, called Pharaoh, was afraid that the Israelites were becoming too many and too strong. Pharaoh made a terrible rule. He ordered that every baby boy born to the Israelites must not be allowed to live. This made the people very sad and afraid. But God had a special plan for one little baby. Around this time, a baby boy was born to a kind mother named Jochebed. When she looked at her tiny baby, she knew he was very special. She loved him very much and wanted to protect him. For three months, Jochebed hid her baby boy in their home. She kept him quiet and safe so the soldiers would not find him. But as the baby grew, it became harder and harder to hide him. Jochebed knew she needed to do something brave. She took some reeds and carefully made a small basket. Then she covered the basket with sticky tar so water could not get inside. It was like a tiny boat made just for her baby. Very gently, she placed her baby boy inside the basket. She wrapped him in soft cloth and kissed him goodbye with tears in her eyes. Jochebed placed the basket among the tall reeds along the Nile River. Nearby, the baby’s older sister, Miriam, hid behind the plants. She watched carefully to see what would happen to her little brother. The river flowed gently, and the basket floated safely among the reeds. Soon, something amazing happened. Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the river to take a bath. She saw the basket floating near the edge of the water. “What is that?” she wondered. She asked one of her servants to bring the basket to her. When the princess opened the basket, she saw the tiny baby inside. The baby began to cry, and the princess felt very sorry for him. “This must be one of the Hebrew babies,” she said softly. Just then, Miriam bravely stepped forward from behind the reeds. “Would you like me to find someone to take care of the baby for you?” she asked. Pharaoh’s daughter smiled and said, “Yes, that would be wonderful.” So Miriam quickly ran home and brought her own mother, Jochebed! The princess asked Jochebed to care for the baby and raise him. “I will pay you to take care of him,” she said kindly. Jochebed’s heart was filled with joy. The baby she loved could now grow up safely! After some time, when the child grew older, Jochebed brought him back to Pharaoh’s daughter. The princess adopted the boy as her own son. She named him Moses, which means “drawn out of the water,” because she had found him in the river. Moses grew up in Pharaoh’s palace, surrounded by beautiful rooms, gardens, and teachers. But God had an even bigger plan for him. One day, Moses would grow up to help God’s people and lead them to freedom. God had protected baby Moses in a tiny basket floating on a river. And from that small beginning, God was preparing Moses for a very great adventure. Even today, the story of baby Moses reminds us that God watches over us and has a special plan for every life.
