The Writing on the Wall – Book 18

King Belshazzar was the ruler of Babylon. One night, he decided to throw a huge party in his palace. The banquet hall was filled with bright lights, delicious food, music, and laughter. Important leaders, soldiers, and nobles gathered to celebrate with the king.

Everyone was eating and drinking happily.

But King Belshazzar made a very foolish choice.

Many years earlier, his grandfather King Nebuchadnezzar had taken holy gold and silver cups from God’s temple in Jerusalem. These special cups were meant only for worshiping God.

During the party, Belshazzar commanded, “Bring the gold and silver cups from the temple!”

Servants hurried away and returned carrying the sacred cups.
The king and his guests drank from them while praising false gods made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Suddenly, something terrifying happened.
A human hand appeared out of nowhere!

The fingers began writing strange words on the palace wall near the lampstand. Everyone in the room froze in fear.

King Belshazzar’s face turned pale. His knees shook so badly that he could hardly stand. The music stopped. The laughter disappeared. The mighty king was terrified.

“What do these words mean?” everyone whispered.

Belshazzar quickly called for his wise men, magicians, and astrologers.

“Whoever can read this writing and explain it,” the king promised, “will receive purple robes, a gold chain, and become the third highest ruler in the kingdom!”

One by one, the wise men stepped forward.
But none of them could read the mysterious message.
The king became even more frightened.
Then the queen entered the banquet hall.

“O king,” she said calmly, “there is a man in your kingdom named Daniel. In the days of King Nebuchadnezzar, God gave him wisdom and understanding. He can explain difficult mysteries.”

So Daniel was brought before the king.

Belshazzar pointed at the writing on the wall and said, “If you can explain these words, I will reward you greatly.”

Daniel looked at the king seriously.
“You may keep your gifts,” Daniel said bravely. “But I will tell you what the writing means.”

Then Daniel reminded Belshazzar about King Nebuchadnezzar. God had once made Nebuchadnezzar powerful, but when he became proud, God humbled him until he learned that the Lord rules over all kingdoms.

“But you, Belshazzar,” Daniel said, “have not humbled yourself. You knew these things, yet you dishonored the God of heaven.”

The room grew silent.

Then Daniel read the words written on the wall:
“Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin.”
Everyone listened carefully.
“This is what the words mean,” Daniel explained.
“Mene” means God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end.
“Tekel” means you have been weighed on the scales and found lacking.
“Parsin” means your kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

The king’s face filled with fear.
Even so, Belshazzar kept his promise and rewarded Daniel with purple robes and a gold chain.

But that very night, the enemy army entered Babylon.
King Belshazzar lost his kingdom exactly as God had said.

This story teaches us that God sees everything we do. He wants people to be humble, wise, and obedient to Him. No king or kingdom is greater than God’s power.
