The Prodigal Son: A Bible Story for Kids about Forgiveness

One day, Jesus Christ told a story to teach people about God’s great love and forgiveness.
“There was once a kind father who had two sons,” Jesus began.
The younger son grew restless. He wanted to travel, see new places, and enjoy life on his own.
One day he said,
“Father, give me my share of the money now.”
The father was sad, but he loved his son and gave him what he asked for.
The young son packed his bags and went to a faraway land. At first, life felt exciting. He bought fancy clothes, tasty food, and had many friends. He spent his money quickly, having fun every day.
But soon, all his money was gone.
Then something terrible happened — a famine came to the land. There was little food and no work. The young man became very hungry and lonely.
He finally found a job feeding pigs, but he was so hungry that even the pig food looked good to him.
Sitting in the dirt one day, he thought,
“My father’s workers always have plenty to eat. I have made a big mistake. I will go home and say sorry.”
So he started his long journey back home.
While he was still far away, his father saw him walking down the road.
The father recognized him immediately.
Instead of being angry, the father ran to his son, hugged him tightly, and kissed him.
“Father, I’m so sorry,” the son cried. “I don’t deserve to be your son anymore.”
But the father smiled with joy.
“Bring the best robe! Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet!” he called. “My son was lost, but now he is found! Let’s celebrate!”
There was music, dancing, and a big joyful feast.
The older son, who had been working faithfully in the fields, heard the celebration and became upset.
“I’ve always obeyed you,” he said. “Why didn’t I get a party like this?”
The father gently replied,
“My son, everything I have is yours. But we must celebrate — your brother was lost and now he is found.”
Jesus finished the story by teaching an important lesson:
God is like the loving father.
When we make mistakes and come back with sorry hearts, God welcomes us with love and forgiveness.
🌟 Lesson for Kids:
God always loves us and forgives us when we say sorry and choose to do right.
